HVAC systems are not one-size-fits-all solutions. For medium to large-sized buildings, zoned HVAC systems are a cost-effective and energy-efficient solution. But how does it work? In today’s post, Cafco Services takes a look at how it differs from standard HVAC systems and weighs its pros and cons.
Standard HVAC systems are designed to heat or cool a single space. A sensor on the thermostat or air handler senses the room temperature and “tells” the HVAC system when to blow warm or cool air. A standard system can be used to heat or cool multiple rooms through air ducts. However, the vents and registers in each room lack individual controls and simply circulate the air from the HVAC system.
One of the most common problems about standard HVAC systems is the inconsistent temperatures. Often, the room that’s furthest from the air handler gets the least heating or cooling. Also, the only way to adjust the output from the registers is by manually adjusting their openings.
This is where zoned HVAC systems come in. The HVAC system output is divided into zones, each with their own heating and cooling control using individual thermostat-controlled dampers. This means each zone can have its own temperature settings. One zone can be designated for the common areas, where heating and cooling can be kept at a minimum at night when these areas are unoccupied. Another zone can be designated for bedrooms, and yet another for rooms that require specific temperatures, like when you have elderly family members that need more warmth.
If you are considering switching to a zoned HVAC system, there are a few things that you have to weigh. In addition to the levels of customization described above, you can benefit from improved efficiency, reduced strain on the system, and compatibility with smart home systems. On the other hand, there are potential setbacks, like greater maintenance requirements and the higher upfront cost, that are worth considering before committing to the switch.
